1000 MUNITION WORKERS
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
MELBOURNE. Saturday.
The conditions under which carpenters areto be sent to Great Britain for munitions work, In accordance with the promise made by Mr. Hughes, the Prime Minister, to send 1000 men away, have now been announced.
The Commonwealth will provide each volunteer with a passage from Australia to Great Britain, and will, as soon as possible after the termination of the war, provide the volunteer with a return passage to Australia. Each volunteer, will receive an allowance of £5 on each voyage, for expenses. The wife or mother of the volunteer or other members of his family approved by the Minister, provided she or they live in Australia at the time of the volunteer's embarkation, will receive allowances as follow:
For the first eight weeks after embarkation, 25s a week and an additional sum of 2s 6d a week for each child under the age of 16. After the expiration of the first eight weeks, and until the return of the volunteer, 20s a week will be paid, with the addition of 2s a week for each child under the age of 16,until the return of the volunteer. From his arrival in Great Britain until his departure, the volunteer will be expected to observe directions and instructions from the Ministry of Munitions or any other duly authorised representative of the Commonwealth Government. Each volunteer must report himself upon arrival in Great Britain, and, upon being appointed to any class of work in the production of munitions must immediatley engage in that work, wherever required. The rates of pay and the conditions of labor willbe those prevailling in the manufactory in which the volunteer is employed. Because of misconduct, the Commonwealth may at any time determine the agreement, and the volunteer shall pay £30 to reimburse the State for the cost of his passage and the amount of his expenses. Any dispute arising regarding industrial conditions is to be referred to the High Commissioner for determination.
