Weekly Times, Melbourne 30-12-1916 It is a huge place, a moving mass of machinery. Everyone is very kind to me. They call me Miss Australia because I am the first from Australia to work here. We all wear blue caps and overalls. At the college there is a large recreation hall with piano also a comfortable dressing room. We can obtain tea and coffee at 1d a cup. At the college one meets women of all classes. Working next to me is Lady Mary Hamilton. From 800 to 1000 women are needed every week in the munition factories to take the places of the men who are being called up for the Army, and to meet the increasing demands for munitions. Training is given free on condition that the students undertake to enter a factory on its conclusion. The maximum duration for training is six weeks - which means four hours a day, six days a week, for that period - or 144 hours training in all. After that the student passes directly into, the "shops" where she will probably earn an initial wage of from £1 to £1/5/ a week. A proficient worker will receive a much higher salary. Accuracy and judgement keenness of sight, and delicacy of touch rather than physical strength are the qualities desired in women munition workers. Lady Scott, widow of the great explorer, has been working in a munition factory for eleven months. |
