Chronicle (Adelaide) 8-6-1918
Obituary.
Mr. Edward Harley Wainwright, F.S.A.S.M., M Inst. C.E.(Australia), died in England in January last, and was buried at Bournemouth on January 26 (Anniversary Day). He was a brother of Mr. W.E. Wainwright, manager of the South mine. He was born on November 15, 1881, his father
being Mr.E.H. Wainwright, one time lecturer in science at St. Peters College, Adelaide. He was educated at St. Peter's passed through the School of Mines, and qualified in practical engineering at Messrs. May Bros., Gawler, and Thompson's works, Castlemaine (Victoria). To gain experience he went to England, and became representative at Copenhagen, Denmark, and later in the Argentine of the British Westinghouse Company. On thee return, journey across the Atlantic his ship, the R.M.S. Arianza, was held up by a German raider, the Kronprinz Wilhelm. He resigned his
civic position on his arrival in England in September, 1914, and on the following day enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers, in which he became corporal. Then when the demand for engineers became acute he was released for munitions work, and was employed at the Crayford works of Vickers, Ltd. Here his talent for organisation secured for him the management, of the shipping department which he started in a small hut on the marshes. It is thought that it was here, through exposure to cold winds and rain, that he acquired the first seeds of the malady that caused his death. Even when ill, however, he would not give up his work. A writer in the 'Crayford Works Magazine' states, in reference to Mr. Wainwright's death,'He gave his life for his country as truly as did any soldier on the field of battle.'
