GILBERT August 2894
Chronicle (Adelaide) 10-10-1925
Mr. Charles Web Gilbert, the well-known Australian sculptor, died in Melbourne on Saturday after an illness lasting a fortnight. He was born in Victoria, and as a young man was employed as a chef. His spare time he devoted to art, which he studied at the Melbourne National Gallery. After spending some time at drawing and painting he turned his attention to sculpture, and in 1897 exhibited his first important work, 'The Vintage Offering, under the auspices of the Yarra Sculptors' Society. There after he was a leading exhibitor at Victorian exhibitions. In 1914 he went to Europe and opened a studio in London. When war broke out he enlisted as a munition worker. During the war his marble bust, 'The Critic,' was purchased under the Chantrey bequest and placed in the Tate Gallery, London. Shortly after the armistice, Mr. Gilbert, then a lieutenant, was sent to France to make models of several battlefields for Australian record purposes. His works in this connection now form an important part of the Australian War Museum. In 1920 Mr. Gilbert returned to Melbourne and settled in his old studio in Fitzroy, from which he issued a series of works largely dealing with Australian deeds in the Great War. In 1917 Mr. Gilbert was nominated an Associate of the Royal Academy. He is represented in South Australia by only one of his works, the bronze statue of an Australian soldier, which forms the Burnside district soldiers' memorial, erected at Rose Park, and unveiled by his Excellency the Governor (Sir Tom Bridges) last December.
