MISS DORA FRENCH.
There are many old Mount Gambier friends of Miss Dora French who will regret to learn that she passed away in a private hospital at the Semaphore, Adelaide on 13th June.
She was the youngest daughter of the late Captain Edward French, who, in the early days of Port MacDonnell, carried on an extensive shipping business in that port. She was born in Adelaide, and came with her parents to Port MacDonnell as a child.
On reaching school going age she was sent to Portland, where she was educated. On leaving school she returned to Port MacDonnell, where she lived for a number of years before coming to Mount Gambier, to reside at "The Nest," Wallis Street. She lived there for a number of years, and then left with her sisters to reside in Adelaide. As a young woman she assisted in all movements for the good of the town. She was a capable amateur actress and accomplished musician, and she took part in many of the concerts and theatrical performances of the early days. Many old residents will remember her conception of "Little Buttercup" in "H.M.S. Pinafore," which was produced by an amateur cast. Acting in conjunction with the late Mr. Joe Mawson as"Dick Dead Eye," her performance was considered by the audience to be nearly up to professional standard. During her life she paid four visits to England. The first was as a child, and the last about two years ago. During the War she went to England with Mrs. F. B. Davison (nee Miss Pollitt), and while there she undertook voluntary work in a canteen on the East Coast.
She, with Miss Bertha French, paid a visit to Mount Gambier a few weeks ago. She stayed with Mrs.Heron, of Wallis Street, for about a fortnight. While in Mount Gambier she contracted a bad cold. She recovered from it, but soon after her return to the Semaphore she had a relapse, and she died as stated. Much sympathy, will be felt for Miss Bertha French in her bereavement.
